How to join a General Practice Admin Team

General practice is the backbone of the NHS. In Wakefield, about 8,000 people will have an appointment with a healthcare professional in their local GP practice every day. To get patients to see their healthcare professional, make appointments, deal with letters and results requires a practice team to make patients care appear seamless. The roles that make this happen include:

  • Reception staff
  • Medical secretaries
  • Prescription clerks
  • Practice administration staff
  • Practice manager.

There is generally no set entry requirements for practice administration staff but you would be expected to have good literacy, numeracy and IT skills. Practice employers often ask for relevant work experience and even where it is not specified it would be an advantage if you have worked in an administration or customer service role

Practice admin staff need to be:

  • Friendly and welcoming
  • Patient and understanding
  • Follow instructions and procedures
  • Work accurately and methodically
  • Work in a team and use their own initiative
  • Deal with people who may be angry or upset
  • Confident using the phone.

In Wakefield, many general practices employ healthcare admin apprentices. Apprenticeships are a great way to learn and gain experience at the same time as being paid. To read more about apprenticeships in the NHS, go to the website.
