Dr Andrew Furber, Director of Public Health
Andrew is the Director of Public Health (DPH) for Wakefield Council. The DPH is a statutory chief officer of the local authority and the principal adviser on all health matters to elected members and officers. His leadership role spans health improvement, health protection and public health.
Andrew joined Wakefield in June 2009 from his previous post as DPH in North Lincolnshire. He is the lead DPH in the Yorkshire and Humber region for tobacco control and the public health specialty training programme.
His department hosts a number of regional initiatives including projects on social norms and health inequalities. He has published a number of academic papers. After studying medicine in Newcastle upon Tyne where he also qualified as a GP, Andrew spent seven years working in Nepal in a variety of roles, latterly with the Government of Nepal on their national HIV/Aids programme. This included a role with the Department for International Development.
